EU alliance of social NGOs calls for social rights to be at the heart of economic governance

On January 23, speaking in a workshop on the social dimension of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) alongside European Commissioner Pierre Moscovici, responsible for Economic and Financial Affairs, Taxation and Customs, Jana Hainsworth, the President of the Social Platform, called for the European Pillar of Social Rights to make it clear that the EU and its Member States are serious about reducing inequalities; but while welcoming the opportunity for discussion among stakeholders, she tentatively warned decision-makers that civil society support for the Pillar is dependent upon a move from rhetoric to concrete actions.

“Putting social rights at the heart of the European Union’s economic governance is key to ensure a sustainable EMU”, argued Hainsworth, at the European Commission conference ‘European Pillar of Social Rights – Going forward together’.
