Autism Europe is now part of a group that wants people with disabilities to choose where they live
Autism Europe is now part of the European Expert Group
on the Transition from Institutional to Community-based Care.
The short name of the group is EEG.
The EEG wants people with disabilities to have a choice about their lives.
EEG wants persons with disabilities to move from big institutions
where they cannot decide what to do in their life
This means de-institutionalistation.
Institutions are places where some people with disabilities live.
They live apart from other people.
This is called “segregation”.
Sometimes segregation happens against the will of people with disabilities.
People who live in institutions have to follow the rules of the institution
and cannot decide for themselves.
That is why EEG wants people with disabilities to live with community-based care instead.
With Community-based care
people with disabilities do not live apart from other people.
They live in the community.
With community-based care
people with disabilities get just the support they need
to live as they want.
So EEG wants the European Union
to help people with disabilities to live within the community.
The European Union is group of 28 countries from Europe.
Autism-Europe supports de-institutionalisation and life in the community of people with disabilities.
So Autism-Europe is happy to be part of the EEG.
Because now Autism Europe can help the EEG on how to move autistic people from big institutions.
So autistic people can get just the support they really need in the community.
