This event, which aims to highlight the significance of Asperger syndrome for both society and individuals, also illustrates one of the many challenges to the newcomer trying to understand the autism spectrum. Such a person might reasonably assume that Asperger syndrome is a condition in its own right.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">On the 18 June 2018, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">World Health Organization (WHO)<\/a>\u00a0released its\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/detail\/18-06-2018-who-releases-new-international-classification-of-diseases-(icd-11)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11)<\/a>. The ICD catalogues different pathologies and conditions in order to provide a common language to inform and control their development, as well as comparing and sharing data following standard criteria between hospitals, regions and countries in different time periods. To do this, the diagnostic terms are converted into around 55 000 unique alphanumeric codes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\">The ICD-11 updates the diagnostic criteria for autism, and is now more in line the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatry.org\/psychiatrists\/practice\/dsm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders)<\/a>\u00a0published in 2013 by the American Psychiatric Association. This is to say that<strong> it includes Asperger\u2019s Syndrome, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder and certain other generalised developmental disorders, within the category of \u2018Autism\u2019.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autismeurope.org\/blog\/2018\/06\/21\/world-health-organisation-updates-classification-of-autism-in-the-icd-11\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">More information<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>International Asperger\u2019s Day falls on February 18th.
