The European Commission wants a European Disability Card for all persons with disabilities in the European Union

The European Commission is a political body that has ideas about laws for the European Union.

The European Union is a group of 27 countries in Europe.

People in the European Union

have the right to move and live freely

in any country of the European Union.

We call this right ‘freedom of movement’.

Persons with disabilities have the right

to freedom of movement too.

But it may be hard for persons with disabilities

to enjoy this right like other people.

Often, persons with disabilities do not have

the same disability status

in all countries of the European Union.

A disability status means people with disabilities

have the right to get support or money

to make life with disability easier.

With the European Disability Card people with disabilities

can prove they have a disability everywhere in Europe.

The European Commission wants

that persons with disabilities can

use the European Disability Card

when they travel to any country

of the European Union:

  • To show they have a disability
  • To get the same advantages in culture, sports, and other activities as persons with disabilities of that country of the European Union

The new European Disability Card

will be used in all 27 countries

of the European Union.

Autism-Europe likes how the European Commission

wants the European Disability Card to be.

Autism-Europe also wants that

autistic people can use

the European Disability Card

to live in another country of the European Union

and have the same rights

as other disabled people in the country.

Autism-Europe wants

that all autistic people

can get a disability status, if they need to.

In the next months, the European Parliament and the European Council

will agree on how and where to use the European Disability Card.

The European Parliament is the political chamber of the European Union.

The people of the European Union vote members into the European Parliament.

The European Council represents the governments of the countries.

Autism-Europe hopes the European Parliament and the European Council

agree on a European Disability Card

that can be used in all countries of the European Union.
