The Rights of Autistic People

Rights explain what things you are allowed to have and to do.

Rights also explain how other people can and cannot treat you.

The “Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities” explains what rights disabled people have.

A convention is an agreement between different countries.

This agreement says that people with disabilities have the same rights as other people.

It says people with disabilities are free to make their own choices.

It says they can go to regular schools.

It says they can work and earn money like everybody else.

It says they can choose where they live.

It says we must treat people with disabilities with respect.

You can read more about the convention if you click here.

In the European Union, almost all countries have promised to follow this agreement.

Only one country has not yet promised to follow it.

This country is Ireland.
