Autistic athletes strike gold in Rio

This September Rio de Janeiro was host to the 2016 Paralypic Games. This year athletes on the autism spectrum were well represented, and were among those whose sporting talents were rewarded with medals.

Some of the most notable autistic athletes to return to Europe with a medal were the following:

  • Florian Van Acker from Belgium who won a gold medal in table tennis;
  • British swimmer Jessica Jane who won silver in the 200m freestyle and bronze in 100m backstroke;
  • Swimmer Marc Evers from the Netherlands who set a new record in heat one of the men’s 100m backstroke.

From the 7 to the 18 September 2016, 4,359 athletes from 163 countries took part in 534 events. Our congratulations go to all those who were part of making September 2016 such an unforgettable month for elite sport.
