In the framework of its Strategy 2018-2021, Autism-Europe intends to promote access to quality inclusive education (including to university and vocational training) .

The aim of Article 24 of the United Nations Convention on the rights of Persons with Disabilities is for States Parties to realise the right of persons with disabilities to education. “With a view to realising this right without discrimination and on the basis of equal opportunity, States Parties shall ensure an inclusive education system at all levels and lifelong learning.” While ensuring that “Effective individualized support measures are provided in environments that maximize academic and social development, consistent with the goal of full inclusion.”
However, access to education remains problematic for autistic people in many EU Member States. AE aims at promoting a better inclusion and accommodation of their educational needs by:
- Gaining knowledge of the barriers they face across the EU through a large survey in EU Member States;
- Analysing the results and issuing recommendations for policy makers and key stakeholders;
- Gathering examples of good practice in relation to access to education across the EU.
For this purpose, we are launching a EU-wide survey to assess the barriers to education faced by autistic people. The analysis of the results will allow us to have a better picture of the state of play in Europe and help us formulate recommendations for policy-makers and key stakeholders, as well as highlight examples of good practices.
