Briefing paper explains the practical use of the EU’s Charter of Fundamental Rights

The Open Society Foundation has produced a briefing paper explaining when and how the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union can be used by advocates at EU and national level.

The Charter is a legally binding document that contains a list of human rights recognised by the EU. The Charter can be used to pressure decision makers to bring policies and legislation in line with human rights standards, or it can serve as the basis for litigation.
